How To Get To Your First 1K On Instagram

How To Get To Your First 1K On Instagram

As you may or may not know, I have an Instagram account. Specifically, it’s a bookstagram account: an Instagram dedicated to my love of books. I’ve had this account for over one and a half years, and have loved every second of it. Here‘s a link to my account.

The bookstagram/ blogging community on Instagram is an amazing place to be, and Instagram is a GREAT place to promote your blog, especially if you love taking pictures of books. Put the link to your blog in your bio, promote your posts with matching pictures… If you build up a following, you can easily direct people to your blog.

I am in no way a bookstagram expert, but I have been doing it a while, and have over 8,000 followers. (I’m not bragging, just stating a fact.) Here is a screenshot of my account:

I’m proud of it! I’ve worked hard on it to get to where I am today.

If you already have over 1,000 followers or literally just started an account, this post can help you improve your account.

My Tips For Bookstagram:

Pick a creative name.

No one wants to have their unique name copied! Let your account name speak for YOU. Don’t just add on to someone else’s. I’d also recommend you pick a username without adding a bunch of underscores and numbers to it- you want your account to be memorable, and that starts with the name.

Follow other bookstagrammers.

Just by following accounts, you might get followers! Especially if you have friends you’ve made through blogging that also have Instagram- if they know you, they’ll probably follow you back. Besides the follower aspect of it, you can see gorgeous pictures of books. I made a list of my favorite accounts a while ago, you can check it out here!

Let people know about your account!

Promote it on Twitter, your blog, anywhere! You want people to know that you have an account. How are they going to follow you if they have no clue?

Remember that it’s not all about followers.

The reason I made my account was to connect with book lovers. Don’t do it to become “famous”. It takes a lot of work, and time, and believe me, if you do it for that reason, you will get burned out. I’ve made real friends through bookstagram, and I count THAT to be my real success.

Take quality photos.

Right away, you may be thinking: “Oh no I don’t have a fancy camera I can’t do this.” This is so not true. There are really popular Instagram accounts who take photos with their phones! I started my account by taking pictures with my Ipod. There is no need for fancy equipment AT ALL.

All I mean by this is put effort into your photos. Make them unique, make them YOU. If your photos are really low quality and blurry, most likely you won’t get very far.

Post consistently.

By consistently, I don’t mean every day. If you can do that, great! Do it! I don’t have the time to take enough photos to take every day. It doesn’t work for me. So say you post every other day, twice a week, anything. Taking hiatuses is okay: I know I’ve done it. But try to announce them, to make sure your followers will know you’ll be gone! Otherwise you may get lots of unfollowers.

Don’t comment “S4S” or “F4F” on photos.

Shoutout for Shoutout? Follow for Follow? No thanks. It’s annoying and it could get you blocked. You’re more likely to gain followers if you comment nice things to start up a conversation, without even mentioning a follow back.

To theme or not to theme?

A theme is in no way related to the success of an account. I don’t have a theme, and so many other bookstagram accounts don’t. On the flip side, a lot of accounts do have themes, so it really doesn’t affect your follower count. You do you.

Do you have a bookstagram? If so, what tips would you give to people to get their first 1K? Leave a link below, and I’ll check it out! If not, are you thinking about creating one? Also, if you have any more questions regarding bookstagram, leave them below!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I started an account in May last year and it was the best decision I ever made! I chose to go with a checkerboard theme for my backgrounds. You can find me @littlewaller if you’re interested 🙂 Happy reading!

  5. I just came across your blog and HOLY INSPIRATION!! I have a newish bookstagram account (@zisreads) and new blog as well (www.zisreads.wordpress.com). I struggle with my bookstagram because I’ve been using it as a log to document what I’m currently reading but I that doesn’t allow me to post consistently. I’m going to have to brainstorm some more ways to allow me to post more consistently but still keep with the book theme!

So glad I came across your blog and I can’t wait to read more of your work!

For me, that’s also very true. I really like getting more followers, but if the numbers don’t grow anymore, so be it. I just like being active in this book community via Instagram, no matter how much followers I have.
I’m almost at 1K and the thing which helped me most is just by being active and use a lot of hashtags when posting photos. Also, follow and comment a lot with other bookstagrammers whose photos you enjoy. So be active with posting photos yourself and be active communicating with other bookstagrammers and let them know how much you appreciate their photos!

  8. AWESOME tips1 I thin kI made a faux pas on the S4S and F4F posts but I only did a couple so hopefully that didn’t ruin my chances. I also decided to join a bookstagram challenge so I don;t have to worry about coming up with ideas but I also post photos of my own. I’m still waaaaay below the followers count but that’s okay. I’m still having fun posting and commenting on other’s instagram accounts!

  9. I do have a bookstagram and just hit 1k a few weeks ago, I’ve told my followers that there would be a lack of photos as it is my exam month. Posting regularly not only helps with your follow count but the amount of likes as well, at least that’s what I’ve experienced.

Another tip is quality over quantity, if you don’t like a photo, retake. Try taking photos at different angles with natural lighting, and then weed out the ones you don’t like. Find your own style too!

But remember, likes and follows are just numbers, the adventure you have there is worth so much more. So my tip is to don’t fret over the numbers and just be you!

  10. I have a dilemma about my bookstagram. So far my Instagram is my personal one and the username is my name. I don’t just post bookish pictures but also personal things. But I don’t really wanna just focus on posting books even though I follow a lot of bookstagrammers and a lot of them follow me to.
Do you suggest I make a separate bookstagram account (maybe related to my blog) and post bookish posts there while I post my own personal pictures in my current one? The cons is that I have to start from scratch, meaning I will have to approach all my current followers to the new account etc. What do you think? 😅

  12. Hi, Ava! I am a follower of you on bookstagram and twitter. That’s how I love you and your posts. 🙂 I also have a bookstagram account and despite running it for almost a year already, I only have 150 followers. Now, the thing is I don’t really mind. That fact is just a number, yes? As long as I’ve got to enjoy the community and my books, I am fine. haha.

    P.S.
Giveaways is also a big help to gain followers.

  13. I started a bookstagram before starting a blog, and it’s an amazing community! I love it!
I would recommend people not to COPY from other accounts. You can GET INSPIRED by other people, but do NOT copy their photos.

  14. I have a bookstagram! ❤ (@alyssaisreading) For me, I started gaining more followers when I started taking and editing my photos properly. If you were to scroll through my first set of photos, they weren't the best but I keep it there because memories 🙂 Also when I started engaging more with everyone else, putting more into my captions, commenting on other people's posts, etc 🙂

  15. Not being bothered about followers is a massive thing for me. I completely agree that the best thing I’ve got out of it is close, lifelong friends. And for that alone, bookstagram means a lot to me!
