Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 (Ish) Books Set In A Fantasy World
We all know that I will take ANY possible chance to shout about fantasy books. So when I saw that this TTT’s topic was top 10 books with X setting, I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to write about.
As you may know, fantasy is my all time favorite genre.
ALL TIME.
I could read only fantasy for the rest of my life. Give me it all: high fantasy, urban fantasy…(I couldn’t think of any other types of fantasy but there are a lot more. Curse my forgetful brain.)
But anyways. Let us get on with the list of fantasy books you ABSOLUTELY MUST READ BECAUSE I DECLARE IT SO.
And also: I have included any pictures I’ve taken of these books before in this post. It may be filled with images, because I love love love talking about these books.
If you click on the book title, it’ll take you to my review of that book (if I have one.)
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
This book deserves spot #1 on this list. Yes, these books are in no particular order…but this book is incredible.
I can’t talk about it enough, honestly. It is the perfect fantasy, and while I adored Leigh Bardugo’s previous books, this one was so much better. If you weren’t a fan of the Grisha trilogy? Read this book. If you were? STILL READ IT.
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Does this series receive a lot of hate? Yes. (And, I might add, sometimes it deserves it. I’m still waiting for Chaolorian to happen, Sarah.)
But it is FANTASTIC and I still adore it, although I do recognize sometimes it can be problematic. But I won’t be talking about it here.
I highly recommend you give it a try. The second book is so much better than the first, and every book gets even better after that.
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
Another Maas book? Yes. I will read anything SJM writes.
You may be wondering why I didn’t mention the first book in this series. Well. That’s because I hated it.
It received ONE STAR from me. And I rarely give out that rating.
I really wasn’t a fan of that book, which made me hesitant to start this one. I saw the raving reviews, and decided to give it a try.
And AM I SO GLAD I DID. It’s now one of my favorite books and I can’t recommend it enough.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
(My review for the sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight, is here.)
Does this count as fantasy? Half of it takes place in a fantasy world…I’ll count it anyway.
If you like gorgeous writing and characters, this book is for you. It features fallen angels (which IS a trope much overdone, like vampires) but it was so, so good. It’s probably the only angel book I’ve enjoyed.
The Young Elites by Marie Lu
This is perfect, unproblematic, incredible fantasy.
I adore this trilogy so, so much, and am eagerly anticipating the release of the third and final book this fall. You should definitely read the first two books if you haven’t already and get caught up before it comes out!
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab
My review for the sequel, A Gathering of Shadows, is here.)
Does it count? I’m not sure. I’m including it because I love it.
This book takes place in London- but not just one London. Multiple Londons. Which is why I’m counting it as fantasy.
Come on, people. It’s V. E. Schwab. You have to read it.
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
While this book isn’t one of my ALL TIME favorites, I still really enjoyed it. And I’d recommend it. It features a love triangle in the first book, but it’s done surprisingly well. And the second book is even better. I still haven’t picked up the third, which came out recently, but I will soon, I promise.
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Another wonderful book, with fabulous characters and a unique world that I just can’t get enough of! The second book comes out at the end of this month, and it’s BETTER. Which is hard to believe, I know.
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
I do recognize that this book has its flaws, but it’s also a great story. I can’t wait for the sequel to release so I can get more of this world and characters.
While it does have mixed reviews, I enjoyed it. And I would still recommend you try it.
The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Like I mentioned above, I enjoyed these books, and I’d really recommend them. They aren’t as good as Six of Crows in my opinion, but they are still fantastic books that definitely deserve to make this list.
The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
I loooooooove this book. It was the first Sanderson book I read (now I’ve only read two, but still. It got me hooked.) Don’t let the size of these books scare you! They’re amazing. Really, fantasy at its best.
Which fantasy books do YOU love? Are any of them on this list? Are there any not as well-known (or well-known, it doesn’t matter) fantasy books you really want me to read?
Thanks for reading!
Ava
People on Goodreads say I should read the Grisha series before Six of Crows… What do you recommend? There’s so man books on this list I want to read! I’m in the middle of ToG right now.

I hope you do get to some of the books on this list! Obviously, I highly recommend them. You DO NOT HAVE TO read Grisha trilogy before Six of Crows. Sure, you get a bit of background if you do, but the worldbuilding in SoC is so great that it’a unnecessary. I enjoyed Grisha, but SoC is so much better, and if you DON’T like Grisha, I don’t want you NOT reading Six of Crows, if that makes sense!

THIS LIST IS IN POINT! So many favs 😍 Okay but seriously Crooked Kingdom needs to come out yesterday because I am so done waiting 😭
p.s. You NEED to read Hero of Ages because it was honestly the best out of the whole trilogy (which was already amazing)

YES! I’m so glad we have similar tastes. And SAME, I need that book now. The wait is destroying me, honestly. I will read Hero of Ages, I promise! I just need to order it from Book Depository because I like the pretty white UK editions…oops. 🙂

The UK editions are beautiful though so it’s a good excuse 😂

I still haven’t read Sanderson, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes though, so if we share so many other favorites maybe i’ll have to pick up those too!

Great list! I just read An Ember in the Ashes last month and I loved it! Can’t wait for the next one! I also know I’m late to the party on Maas’s books as I’m still catching up with the Throne of Glass series. So many others on here I want to read too!

(And I skipped ACOMAF because I hated ACTOAR too haha…but I’m kind of ditching SJM books now I’m soooorry. I’m really really glad that you loved ACOMAF after not liking the first book though! That’s quite the series comeback, right?!)
And omg SO MUCH APPRECIATION FOR LEIGH BARDUGO. Her books are so my favourites. I cannot get enough of Six of Crows. ❤ Crooked Kingdom cooome to me!!

*fistbumps* FANTASY LOVERS UNITE! AHHH you totally should read Kiss of Deception. I enjoyed it! Not a total favorite, but still good. I hope you like it! Oh I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who disliked ACOTAR…so many people loved it and I was just like “ew get this book away from me”. Okay not really. But still. ACOMAF was SO MUCH BETTER. I’m sad that you’re not reading SJM books anymore, but *shrugs* good for you for knowing what you like! YES LEIGH BARDUGO IS INCREDIBLE. I don’t think she can write anything less than perfect. I can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom. Obviously, I’ve already read your TTT, and amazing choices! I still need to get to a few of them though.

This is a great list!! I love the Throne of Glass series and ACOTAR series 🙂 I also have all three of the Grisha books on my kindle, but I haven’t read them yet. I read An Ember a while back, but I felt underwhelmed by it. I also loved the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and I have The Kiss of Deception on my TBR 🙂 great list

Ahh yes for SJM appreciation! *high fives* Now that I’ve read ACOMAF, I do too! Oh my gosh, you HAVE to read Grisha. It’s fabulous. And so is Six of Crows. Aww, darn! I’m sad you weren’t a fan of Ember, but not everyone is. DoSaB is AMAZING, and I hope you read TKOD soon! It looks like we have pretttttty similar reading tastes.

I do have all of the Grisha on my kindle, but I have so many review books to read, it’s going to have to wait!! I did love Laini Taylor’s series and I cannot wait for her new book!! I hope so too, I have heard so many amazing things about it!! We do! 😀

Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I absolutely adore that series! I love how in depth and different the world is!

Oh, me too! I could read so many more books set in that world and with those characters. I’m eagerly anticipating Laini Taylor’s next book, and hoping it’ll be just as good! It’ll be hard to live up to DoSaB, though… But I’m sure it’ll be fabulous.

Fantastic list! I’m so mad at myself for forgetting to add A Court of Mist and Fury to my list (my list is on top books set in other worlds). I definitely prefer it over A Court of Thorns and Roses.
I haven’t read Throne of Glass yet and I hope to get to it later this year. I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone and really liked Kiss of Deception. I still need to finish both of those series. Sometimes I’ll love the first book and then be nervous that I won’t like the rest so I put off reading them 🙂

Aww, no! I’m sad you forgot ACOMAF too. It was incredible, right? And nice choice for a TTT topic! Me too, for sure: I hated ACOTAR. Oh, I hope you read TOG soon! I love those books. I also hope you finish TKOD and DOSAB series soon! They really are great, although I haven’t read the third Kiss of Deception book yet…but it just came out! I’ll hopefully get to it soon. And I feel you on that last thing! I know I’ve been disappointed by second books before.

I’ve read three books from the Throne of Glass series, but I can’t say I see any improvement, haha. I love mocking it, but I have grown attached to the characters, even though Lady Celaena is definitely not a favorite. Too bad because when I finally found a character I warmed to instantly, said character was killed not long after…!
I am waiting for the last installment of The Young Elites to be released before diving into the series 🙂

It’s refreshing to see people not kiss-ass to Sarah J Maas’ series.

Aww, no! But I know that not everyone loves them, so *shrugs* don’t waste your time! I agree that Celaena is not always my favorite character, but I adore Nehemia, Manon, Dorian… Oh, The Midnight Star is coming out kind of soon, so I hope you love them!
